One in 20 hospital patients get infections. In California, roughly 200,000 people get hospital infections annually, and 12,000 of them die, according to state Department of Public Health statistics. That makes such infections one of the state’s leading causes of death, ahead of automobile accidents and Alzheimer’s disease.
Yet these deaths have remained mostly in the shadows. They often are classified as “deaths from complications,” an oblique term used in obituaries and often unquestioned by relatives and friends says California Nursing Home Abuse and Neglect lawyer Steven Peck.
Even the best doctors can be baffled whether an infection was acquired before or after a patient was admitted, and if it was the principal cause of death or no factor at all.
Many health care providers historically have viewed hospital infections – going by obscure names or acronyms such as C.diff, CLABSI, VRE and the more familiar MRSA – as a sometimes inevitable consequence of being hospitalized.
That has begun to change.

Researchers from three sources – the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington state bankruptcy-court records and a National Cancer Institute registry – studied data that tracked the connection between cancer incidence and bankruptcy filings.
In an article on www.wsj.com , Rachel Feintzeig reports on the study that was published in the most recent issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
Researchers, who examined 231,799 cancer cases, discovered that 4,805 of the individuals , filed for personal bankruptcy protection in the years directly following their diagnoses. Patients with lung, thyroid and leukemia/lymphoma cancers were most likely to file Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 at the one-, two-, and five-year marks following diagnosis; five years following a lung cancer diagnosis, 7.7% of patients filed personal bankruptcy.
Scientists also determined that surgery and chemotherapy increased the incidence that people with certain types of cancers would seek bankruptcy protection. The

Today is April 4, leaving just 11 days until tax day 2011. And while your financial mind may be on other things at this point, tax day can serve as another reminder that if you havent checked your credit report lately, you need to do it. If you havent checked your credit report yet for the year 2011, you have another reminder, another chance to do it now. You can do it later but you will be better off if you do it now.
You need to do it. At least one time per year, more often if you have bad credit or if you are consciously trying to improve your credit you need to check out your credit report.
You are entitled to one free credit report each year from each of the three main credit reporting agencies. Do not go to the sites that are advertised on the TV unless of course they are for the right one!

Legal Helpers in southern Florida recently won sanctions against Chase Manhattan Bank! Chase originally had agreed to modify our clients’ mortgage through the reaffirmation process. All parties agreed to the modification and the reaffirmation agreement. However, Chase failed to file the agreement with the court as was their duty, despite continual prodding from Legal Helpers and multiple submission of the documents to the bank. This is yet another example of Legal Helpers aggressively representing its clients and protecting them from their creditors.
